Back Pain Treatment in Singapore — Diagnosis-First, Non-Invasive Spine Care
At The Pain Relief Clinic, back pain is managed using a structured, evidence-based approach focused on accurate diagnosis, selective imaging, and targeted non-invasive treatment.
Rather than relying on symptom-based care alone, we focus on identifying the underlying cause of back pain and building a clear, step-by-step recovery plan.
Our Structured Approach to Back Pain
- Clinical Assessment (GP-led)
Detailed evaluation of pain pattern, nerve symptoms, movement restriction, and functional impact. - Selective Imaging
MRI or X-ray is arranged only when clinically indicated to assess spinal structures, discs, or nerve involvement. - Diagnosis and Classification
Identification of the cause such as muscle strain, disc-related pain, nerve compression, or degenerative changes. - Targeted Non-Invasive Treatment
Treatment is matched to the diagnosis rather than generalised symptom relief. - Spine-Focused Rehabilitation
Structured physiotherapy focusing on posture, movement control, and spinal load management. - Progress Tracking
Ongoing reassessment to adjust treatment based on response. - Specialist Referral (if required)
Referral to orthopaedic or spine specialists when surgical evaluation is necessary.
What Causes Back Pain?
Back pain can originate from multiple structures including muscles, spinal joints, intervertebral discs, and nerves. Common causes include muscle strain, disc irritation, nerve compression, and degenerative spinal changes.
Why a Diagnosis-First Approach Matters
Back pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Without identifying the underlying cause, treatment may only provide temporary relief.
A structured approach ensures:
- Accurate identification of pain source
- Appropriate use of imaging
- Targeted treatment planning
- Better long-term outcomes
Non-Invasive Treatment First
Most cases of back pain improve without surgery. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, improving spinal mechanics, and restoring movement control.
When is Imaging or Specialist Referral Needed?
Imaging or referral is considered when there are:
Suspected disc or structural spinal issues
Persistent or worsening symptoms
Nerve-related symptoms (e.g. numbness, tingling, weakness)
Our Back Pain Care Pathway
Clinical Assessment → Imaging (if indicated) → Diagnosis Classification → Targeted Treatment → Spine Rehabilitation → Reassessment → Specialist Referral (if required)
What To Expect When I Visit The Pain Relief Clinic
A typical visit will involve our doctor first understanding your medical history, concerns and previous experience with other pain treatments.
For patients who have consulted many people but have yet to receive a clear diagnosis, selecting an affordable imaging scan might be recommended to confirm the cause of your pain..
Some patients have already done scans with other doctors for their pain condition but are still not clearly told what they suffer from.
Dr Terence Tan is happy to offer you a second opinion and recommend how best to manage your condition.
We also see patients who already have a confirmed diagnosis from specialist pain doctors, but are "stuck” because treatment options offered are not practical or acceptable.
We can help by discussing options that you might have potentially never been told of.
A common experience is when a patient has already consulted a specialist doctor for pain management and is told to consider orthopaedic surgery which they find too aggressive.
Or they may have seen doctors for their pain and were prescribed painkillers with potential side effects which made them feel uncomfortable.
Many of our patients have also first tried complementary treatments or acupuncture with traditional Chinese pain doctors.
They look for a second opinion after finding any relief experienced from other treatments to be temporary or requiring repetitive treatments, which add up to time and cost.
Especially in such situations, we emphasize using non-invasive medical technology you likely have not been told about .
This can make a big difference to your results.
