Fibromyalgia

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, previously also known as muscular rheumatism and fibrositis, is a condition of unknown cause and is characterized by aching pain, tenderness and stiffness of the muscles, tendon insertion areas and adjacent soft tissues. The disease is usually suspected when patients complain of exhaustion and fatigue along with presence of multiple tender points (points on the body which are tender on applying pressure).

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

The specific cause of this disease is still not well understood at present. It is postulated that in fibromyalgia, the threshold for pain is lowered because of increased sensitivity of pain signals in the brain. Researchers believe that when repetitive pain signals repeatedly stimulate the brain centers, the concentrations of the chemical substances called neurotransmitters increases in the brain. This causes the brain centers to become sensitive to even minute signals of sensations which are ultimately perceived as pain. The reason behind this sensitization and the reason why it affects some individuals while sparing others is still unknown.

How Can Fibromyalgia Be Treated?

The treatment of fibromyalgia is often difficult. Many patients consult multiple doctors, specialists, and alternative healthcare providers with limited success.
Very often, a combination of medications and physical therapy provides limited relief of symptoms.
